Privacy Policy
Effective 27 September 2026 · Updated 27 September 2026
The short version. Buddy saves links to workout videos you choose and sorts them by exercise. To do that, we store your account, your profile, and the links you save. We send the videos you save to an AI service that identifies the exercises. We don't sell your data, we don't show ads, and we don't track you across other apps or websites. You can ask us to delete everything at any time.
1. Who we are
Buddy (the mobile app and getgymbuddy.fitness) is run by an independent developer based in India (“Buddy”, “we”, “us”). We are the data controller (a “data fiduciary” under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023) for the personal information described here. You can reach us at getgymbuddyhq@gmail.com.
2. Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account details. If you sign up with email, your email address and password. We store only a secure hash of the password, never the password itself. If you use Sign in with Apple or Google, we receive the name and email address that the provider shares with us. With Apple, this may be a private relay address. You can also use Buddy as a guest. We then create an account identified only by a random ID.
- Profile. Your display name and, if you add one, a profile photo that you pick from your photo library. During setup you can also give your age, country, body weight, height, preferred units, and fitness goal. Weight, height, and fitness goal relate to your health. We use them only to personalise Buddy for you.
- Saved clips. Links you share to Buddy from Instagram, YouTube, or other apps. For each one we also store its title, caption, thumbnail image, length, the exercises it is filed under, and any changes you make to how it is sorted.
- Messages to us. Anything you send when you email us.
Information created when you use Buddy
- Clip analysis. When you save a clip, our server downloads the video from the site it came from and analyses it to find the exercises it shows. The results include exercise names, timestamps, equipment, muscles worked, and form cues. They are stored with the clip. We delete the downloaded video file as soon as the analysis finishes.
- Crash reports. If the app crashes or an operation fails, we receive a report that includes your device model, operating system, app version, and technical details of the error. Before a report leaves your device, we remove your user ID and device name. We also replace any web addresses, email addresses, and access tokens in it with placeholders.
- Usage analytics. If analytics is on (see section 7), we record a fixed set of events. These are: the app being installed, opened, or updated; the screens you visit; signing up, signing in, and signing out, including which method you used; a clip being saved or opened; and update prompts. Each event includes app version and build, the app update you are running, operating system, device model, and random device and session IDs. We link these events to your account’s random ID, never your name or email. Against that ID we store a few totals, such as how many clips you have saved from each app, whether you use a guest account, and when your account was created. Our analytics provider estimates your approximate location (country, region, and city) from your IP address. We never collect precise GPS location, and we don’t record the links you save, their titles, or your training details in analytics. Crash reports and usage analytics are collected only in public releases of the app, not in test builds.
We do not collect your precise (GPS) location, contacts, or advertising identifier. We only access your photo library when you choose a profile photo.
3. How we use it

| Answer your questions and requests | Messages to us | Performing our contract with you, or complying with legal obligations |
We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not sell or rent it. We don’t “share” it for cross-context behavioural advertising, as that term is used in US state privacy laws. We do not use your clips or profile to train AI models, and we choose AI providers that are not permitted to either (see section 4). The exercise catalogue is shared by all users. Its pictures are generated from exercise descriptions, never from your videos or photos.
4. Who we share it with
We use a small number of service providers to run Buddy. They process information only on our instructions and only to provide their service:
- Hosting. A virtual server that we rent from a hosting provider. It stores the database and files behind your account.
- AI video analysis. OpenRouter, Inc. (USA) routes the saved video and its caption to the AI model that analyses them. We may also use Google’s Gemini API for this. We use these services under terms that do not allow our inputs to be used to train their models.
- Crash reporting. Functional Software, Inc. (Sentry, USA) receives the scrubbed crash reports described above.
- Product analytics. PostHog, Inc. (USA) receives the usage analytics described above. It works out your approximate location from your IP address.
- Sign-in providers. Apple and Google, if you choose to sign in with them. Their own privacy policies apply to what you share with them.
- Email delivery. A delivery provider that sends account emails, such as sign-up confirmations and password resets.
When you save a clip, your device and our server contact the site it came from, such as Instagram or YouTube, to get the title, thumbnail, and video. When you open a clip, it opens in that site’s app. That site’s own privacy policy applies to what happens there.
We may also disclose information when the law requires it, to protect the rights, safety, or property of our users or others, or as part of a transfer if Buddy is ever sold or reorganised. In a transfer, this policy would continue to protect your information.
5. International transfers
Buddy is run from India, and some of our service providers are in the United States. Your information may be processed in countries whose laws differ from those of your own country. Where the law requires, we use appropriate safeguards for these transfers, such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.
6. How long we keep it
- Your account, profile, and saved clips are kept until you delete them or ask us to delete your account.
- When you delete a clip, we remove it and its analysis from your library.
- You can delete your account in the app under Profile → Privacy → Delete account, or by emailing us. Deletion happens after a 10-day grace period. If you sign in again during those 10 days, the request is cancelled and your account stays as it was. After the grace period we permanently delete your account, profile, photo, clips, and thumbnails. We keep information after that only where the law requires it. Exercises that Buddy added to the shared catalogue while analysing your clips stay in the catalogue, but they are no longer linked to you.
- Downloaded video files are deleted as soon as the analysis finishes.
- Crash reports and usage analytics are kept for no longer than our providers’ standard retention periods, which is at most 13 months.
- A guest account exists only on the device that created it. If you delete the app or sign out without linking the account to Apple, Google, or email, its data can no longer be reached. You can then ask us to delete it.
7. Your choices and rights
You can view and edit your profile in the app, remove your body measurements, delete any clip, and delete your account at any time. Analytics choice: if you are in the EU, EEA, UK, or Switzerland, Buddy asks before turning on usage analytics, and it stays off unless you allow it. Elsewhere it is on by default. Anyone can turn it on or off in Profile → Privacy → Share usage analytics. Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to:
- access the personal information we hold about you and get a copy of it in a portable format;
- correct information that is inaccurate or incomplete;
- delete your information and your account;
- object to or restrict certain processing, and withdraw consent you have given, without affecting processing that happened before;
- nominate another person to exercise your rights if you die or become unable to do so (India);
- not be discriminated against for exercising these rights (US states);
- complain to a data protection authority, such as the Data Protection Board of India or your local authority in the EU or UK.
To make a request, email getgymbuddyhq@gmail.com from the email address on your account, or tell us your account details. We may need to confirm your identity first. We aim to respond within 30 days, and always within the time the law allows. You can use an authorised agent where your local law permits.
Grievances (India). For complaints about how we handle your personal data, contact our grievance contact at getgymbuddyhq@gmail.com. We will respond within the time required by the Digital Personal Data Protection Act and its rules.
8. Security
We encrypt data in transit with HTTPS. We store passwords only as secure hashes and use access controls so that each user can reach only their own clips and profile. We keep our servers updated and limit who can access them. No system is perfectly secure, however. If a breach affects your personal information, we will notify you and the relevant authorities where the law requires.
9. Children
Buddy is not meant for anyone under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 16 has given us personal information, email us and we will delete it.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page. If a change is significant, we will also tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
11. Contact
